La dependencia del ser humano al agua no se limita a satisfacer su necesidad básica de beberla; también requiere del agua para la elaboración de otros satisfactores, de las sociedades modernas (bienes materiales como vestimenta, calzado, automovil, etc.). Se conoce como huella hídrica al volumen de agua apropiado por el ser humano para su consumo y utilización y que no está disponible para otros usos.

Al ser el agua un compuesto fundamental para la existencia de la vida y el bienestar de las sociedades y de los ecosistemas naturales, se requiere una transición hacia su uso sostenible. Esta transición implica gestionar el agua integralmente, comprendiendo el ciclo del agua y analizando como la intervención humana afecta la calidad y disponibilidad del agua, asi como también, reconociendo al agua como un compuesto transversal que incide en la economía, el ambiente y la sociedad con impactos locales y en muchos casos, globales.
