THE COURSE -basic punctuation made easy

We learn that punctuation is not the same as grammar - it's much, much simpler. We also learn how important it can be. One man was hanged in London during the first world war, but would have lived if it had not been for a comma.

NB REMEMBER, YOU CAN DOWNLOAD HARD COPY NOTES - JUST USE THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON, TOP RIGHT.

We look at the sentence in its most basic form and see how difficult it is to read a passage without stumbling when there is no punctuation. We improve things out of all recognition with just two items of punctuation.

NB REMEMBER EACH 'LECTURE' HAS DOWNLOADABLE NOTES. USE THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON, TOP RIGHT.

We learn about the Interrobang and its resemblace to the SS insignia. We explore the use and abuse of the exclamation mark and the question mark, their role in conveying emotion. We also learn about people who wear cardboard boxes on their feet.

We learn the EASY way to apply commas.

REMEMBER, THERE ARE PDF NOTES FOR EACH SESSION. THEY CAN BE DOWNLOADED BY USING THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON, TOP RIGHT.

The colon is one of the easiest punctuation marks to use. It acts as ringmaster to the sentence.

How to use the apostrophe part 1

We learn about the second use of apostrophes, to denote ownership, and we meet the added complication of more than one 'owner'. Some simple tests help us out.

REMEMBER, THERE ARE PDF NOTES FOR EACH SESSION. THEY CAN BE DOWNLOADED BY USING THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON, TOP RIGHT.

In this session, we learn about speech marks, or quotation marks. Remember, as with all these sessions, there are hard copy notes that you can download and print off.
