Magic in the Middle Ages

Magical thought has always attracted human imagination. In this course we will introduce you to the Middle Ages through a wide conception of magic. Students will have an approach to medieval culture, beliefs and practices from the perspective of History and History of Science. Popular magic, as well as learned magic (alchemy, geomancy and necromancy) will be addressed. Moreover, we will also deal with how eastern practices and texts influenced western culture. In July 2016, the course will contain a brand-new module devoted to astrology. Magic in the Middle Ages offers a captivating overview of medieval society and promotes reflection about certain stereotypes associated with this period. At the end of the course, the students: a) will have overcome the usual prejudices about the Middle Ages, b) will be able to analyze historical documentation from the Middle Ages and recognize the most common patterns of juridical documents regarding witchcraft, and c) will be capable of distinguishing between popular magic and the magic of the learned people; will have a notion of which spiritual practices were allowed in medieval Europe and which ones were related to the devil, and will be aware of the link between a cultural product and the society that produced it. This course is taught in English, although subtitles in English, Catalan and Spanish will also be provided. COURSE SYLLABUS Week 1. Introduction to medieval magic (Pau Castell). Week 2. Fascinating insight into the reality of magic during the middle ages.

It give the student a panoramic view of magic and witchcraft in the middle ages specially in the geographic locations of Europe (Spain, France and Italy) and the Arabic domains.

I learned so many amazing and unusual things about beliefs in the middle ages!

Definitely a worthwhile introduction to the subject, or a support to a study of the Middle Ages.

This course is very interesting and provides objective information and "myth-busters" that prove the difference between what we think of Magic in the Middle Ages and what was most probably the reality.

I need another Magic in the middle ages course!

It is an incredible and very useful course to know the world of magic in the Middle Ages.

Thank you for offering Magic in the Middle Ages!

Very interesting course.

quizzes were thoughtfulpeer work not so muchaudio was poorcontent without context of era Very interesting course interesting topic, would be great to have demonstrated more resources during the video and readings for self-study.

Very interesting course!

Interesting as the class presents a good, multi-faceted view and description of magic, covering Jewish and Muslim magic too, which was a very good part Very interesting course - I enjoyed it immensely.

A few opportunities to demonstrate learning A very interesting course with amazing teachers.

i was really looking hard for some course covering the topic wicca(: Very interesting course and very well done.

Very interesting course Certain aspects of the course could be improved, particularly in the way the material is presented.

It is a very interesting course, but in the beginning it may seem a bit disorganised and slow.

Great course, I´m just loving it, thanks so much for putting this up!

I had so much fun taking this course, I'd highly recommend!

Thank you so much!

I learned so much of what I had never known before.

I think I will take it again because I learned so much about something I needed to study a bit.

It was a great course with many details about a period in history we don't know so much!

They have so much information and teach in an enjoyable manner.

peer review in 3 reviews

The material is good and interesting but in Units 3 and 4 there are peer review submissions - that is you write a shot piece, as defined by tutors and submit it for peer review by at least 3 other people on the course.

This part of the course is badly designed: the layout and presentation of the questions and review process is muddled and the peer review element simply does not work.

What I didn't enjoy about this course was having to peer review my classmate's assignments; as I often tend to complete a whole course in a short time , this process slowed down my progress and I wasn't enjoying the course as much as I wished to.

I liked the course work with the quizzes and the written part and peer review as well.
