Laut einer Umfrage von 2019 sind 19% der Deutschen der Meinung, dass es ihn gibt. In einer amerikanischen Umfrage halten ihn fast 25 % der Befragten für die Corona-Pandemie verantwortlich.In der Bibel wird er meistens durch seine Tätigkeit definiert: Er ist der Ankläger der Menschen, auf Hebräisch der ‚Satan‘. Aber auch die Erinnerung an seine ursprüngliche Schönheit – Lucifer, also Träger des Lichtes, war der schönste der Engel – ist ihm zum Eigennamen geworden. Lange Zeit blieb der Teufel dennoch am Rande der religiösen und soziokulturellen Überlegungen der Menschen. Er trat immer nur dann in Erscheinung, wenn jemand für die Schwierigkeiten des Lebens und die dunklen Anteile des Menschen verantwortlich gemacht werden musste oder anderen Angst einjagen sollte. Zunehmend wurde er aber auch mit dem Bösen selbst identifiziert. Massenmord, Kinderschändung, aber auch sexuelle Lust wurden ihm zur Last gelegt. Der Teufel ist der Protagonist in unzähligen Erzählungen, Legenden, mythischen Darstellungen, Bildern und Vorstellungen. Oft begleiten ihn seine dämonischen Helfer, vom Basilisk bis zum Werwolf ist alles dabei. Die Geschichte des Teufels zeichnet das MOOC nach.
