Mastitis epidemiology and diagnostic

Simon Dufour

Experts from more than 20 countries have decided to work together to produce this series of three MOOC, designed for graduate students, to give them the knowledge they need to initiate their research program. Of course, these MOOCs will also be useful for dairy practitioners, teachers, and for individuals that already have a solid scientific background, and are interested in learning about bovine mastitis.

This second MOOC (of a duration of 18 hours), titled "Mastitis Epidemiology and Diagnostic" will discuss risk factors as well as measuring the prevalence and incidence of clinical and subclinical mastitis. This MOOC will also present the main pathogens causing the disease, their transmission modalities (contagious or environmental), the conventional diagnostic methods and the newest molecular avenues to identify them accurately.

This series will be followed by a third MOOC that will focus on the control of mastitis.

We hope this series will answer all your questions and will be useful for your professional development. Welcome to the "Mastitis epidemiology and diagnostic" MOOC!

Career center

Learners who complete Mastitis epidemiology and diagnostic will develop knowledge and skills that may be useful to these careers:
Veterinary Epidemiologist
Veterinary Epidemiologists study the occurrence of disease in animal populations. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be extremely valuable to this role, as mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle. This course would equip you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, to measure its prevalence and incidence, and to accurately identify pathogens.
Veterinarian
Veterinarians diagnose and treat diseases in animals. Mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle, so a Veterinarian who specializes in treating dairy cattle would benefit from taking this course. They will gain the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would be able to accurately identify and diagnose pathogens.
Dairy Farmer
Dairy Farmers are responsible for the care and milking of dairy cows. They would benefit from a background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics to have a strong understanding of the different pathogens that can cause mastitis, the risk factors for mastitis, and how to accurately diagnose the disease. This will help them take steps to prevent and control mastitis in their herd.
Microbiologist
Microbiologists study microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis is caused by a variety of microorganisms. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the different pathogens that can cause mastitis, and would help you to develop methods to identify and control these pathogens.
Animal Nutritionist
Animal Nutritionists develop and evaluate feeding programs for animals. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as nutrition can play a role in the development of mastitis. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop feeding programs that can help to prevent the disease.
Public Health Veterinarian
Public Health Veterinarians protect the health of the public by preventing and controlling animal diseases. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop programs to prevent and control the disease.
Dairy Inspector
Dairy Inspectors ensure that milk and dairy products are safe and meet quality standards. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis can affect the quality of milk. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop inspection procedures that can help to prevent the disease.
Animal Scientist
Animal Scientists study the biology and behavior of animals. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop management practices that can help to prevent the disease.
Research Scientist
Research Scientists conduct research to improve the health and well-being of animals. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop research projects to prevent and control the disease.
Epidemiologist
Epidemiologists study the occurrence of disease in human populations. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as the principles of epidemiology are the same for both human and animal populations. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop strategies to prevent and control the disease.
Technical Service Veterinarian
Technical Service Veterinarians provide technical support to farmers and other animal owners. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop recommendations to prevent and control the disease.
Dairy Extension Agent
Dairy Extension Agents provide education and technical support to dairy farmers. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop educational programs to prevent and control the disease.
Veterinary Technician
Veterinary Technicians assist Veterinarians in the care and treatment of animals. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to assist Veterinarians in diagnosing and treating the disease.
Quality Control Manager
Quality Control Managers ensure that products meet safety and quality standards. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis can affect the quality of milk. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop quality control procedures to prevent the disease.
Food Safety Inspector
Food Safety Inspectors ensure that food is safe and meets quality standards. A background in mastitis epidemiology and diagnostics would be helpful for this role, as mastitis can affect the quality of milk. This course would provide you with the knowledge to understand the risk factors for mastitis, and would help you to develop inspection procedures to prevent the disease.
