While yoga offers numerous benefits, contraindications exist because every body is different, and what helps one person may not be safe for another. This is why we must take an individualized approach, always considering a student’s health history and any guidance from their doctor or physiotherapist.

For example, backbends can strengthen the spine, but for someone with osteoporosis, a herniated disc, or acute pain, backbends would be inappropriate. Similarly, forward folds can release tension but may be contraindicated for certain spinal conditions.

As teachers, our role is to offer safe and adaptable options, encouraging students to move within a pain-free range of motion and listen to their bodies. Chair yoga, props, and mindful breathwork can provide accessible alternatives, ensuring that yoga remains inclusive, supportive, and beneficial for all.

The beauty of working with videos is that everyone can move at their own pace, so feel free to pause the videos and take as much time as you need to set yourself up. This will become easier as you practice the poses and become more familiar with the set up.

Start your day with this quick and graceful chair yoga dance routine that will fill you with joy and happiness!
