Buddhism and Modern Psychology

The Dalai Lama has said that Buddhism and science are deeply compatible and has encouraged Western scholars to critically examine both the meditative practice and Buddhist ideas about the human mind. A number of scientists and philosophers have taken up this challenge. There have been brain scans of meditators and philosophical examinations of Buddhist doctrines. There have even been discussions of Darwin and the Buddha: Do early Buddhist descriptions of the mind, and of the human condition, make particular sense in light of evolutionary psychology? This course will examine how Buddhism is faring under this scrutiny. Are neuroscientists starting to understand how meditation “works”? Would such an understanding validate meditation—or might physical explanations of meditation undermine the spiritual significance attributed to it? And how are some of the basic Buddhist claims about the human mind holding up? We’ll pay special attention to some highly counterintuitive doctrines: that the self doesn’t exist, and that much of perceived reality is in some sense illusory. Do these claims, radical as they sound, make a certain kind of sense in light of modern psychology? And what are the implications of all this for how we should live our lives? Can meditation make us not just happier, but better people? All the features of this course are available for free. It does not offer a certificate upon completion.

Buddhism and Modern Psychology for Buddhism This is an excellent course.

Great course - a starting point for exploring both Buddhism and Modern Psychology!

Dr Wright's teaching are also great for us the learn the basic knowledge about both Buddhism and modern psychology, though the topic itself are very difficult because Buddhism is far more profound than we can expect and modern psychology are still very young.

The professor, Robert Wright, is well spoken and clearly explains the connection between Buddhism and modern psychology.

With captivating video lectures backed with interviews with world-class experts on subject matters, this course is a must for those interested in the intersection of Buddhism and modern psychology.

Professor really presents the right breadth and depth required whether you are new to Buddhism, experienced Buddhist practitioner or someone who just want to know the Buddhism and its correspondence with Modern psychology (or someone who just want to analyse and review validity either/or/both Buddhism and Modern psychology for themselves).

I also find Prof. Wright's examples amusing, as he connects Buddhism and modern psychology to the mundane things in life, like donuts.

office hours

he does ramble a lot during his office hours though, which is amusing and thought-provoking at the same time.

I perceive that the Office Hours segments became less useful at Lecture 6.

Watch the office hours videos!

I especially enjoyed the office hours segments and seeing Frazier and Milo.

Don't miss the office hours as they are the most fun.

"Office Hours" were a great pleasure.

Special thanks to Milo and Frasier for bringing a touch of humor in the delightful office hours^^.

This is a wonderful course, both in terms of well-organized content, office hours and reference materials and in terms of insights it provides into a Buddhist way of life.

I also enjoyed the "office hours", where the lecturer was more free to express his opinions in an informal way.

I appreciate the time he put in this course and in the office hours answering students questions.

This is helped by the weekly office hours, were Wright reflects on the past week and brings up points brought up by students.

Excellent class, well organized, enjoyed the lectures and office hours and resource reading/video recommendations.

Informative (interesting lectures and readings), fun (informal office hours videos w/the Professor and his dogs) and applicable to everyday life (learning about meditation benefits).

The office hours at the end of each week's lecture were also very entertaining and insightful.

easy to follow

Very animated, well paced and supported by a good portion of "side discussions", interviews and references to the literature, the course was mostly seamless and easy to follow.

Professor Wright makes it easy to follow the Buddha's ideas, while relating those to modern science, and my view of what both subjects are changed for the best.

This is very well structured course interesting and easy to follow.

It was a clear and easy to follow course overall.

The lectures were almost always very easy to follow and Dr. Wright explained all concepts in a very clear and interesting way.

point of view

An excellent introduction to Buddhism from a secular point of view, and a great complement to a meditation practice.

Just his weekly resources, links, reference books, lectures alone are fantastic not to mention understanding the human brain from a evolutionary psychology point of view and understanding how Buddhist meditation can help improve our natural selection design flaws.Outstanding job Robert!Metta,Andrew Di Genova Excellent course, I learned a lot about Buddhism and evolutionary psychology.

Professor Wright made sure that we get examples not only from modern science and experiments, but also from experienced Buddhist practitioners who shared their personal point of view on the subject.

It offered me a new angle, a new point of view on the subject.

Analyses Buddhism basics from scientific point of view (mostly from the Theory of Evolution).

a different point of view of modern and ancient... excellent I find the subject and the material fascinating.

From that point of view, I think this class is a perfect argument why Psychology should be treated as a science rather than an art in society, with its roots founded in the existence of humanity, and the evolution of humankind.

Brilliant and full of hope for humankind !The teaching is great because it is easily understandable on a cognitive point of view, the reamaining inner path is up to you !

You are helping me to see clearer Prof. Wright & Team by being aware of my biases.Thank you for that :-) Excellent course for those who try to understand eastern philosophy from rational point of view.

The course offers a wonderful opportunity for western students to get closer to the world of Buddhist philosophy, from a point of view that is compatible with western thought, science, and philosophy.

Great intro to Buddhism from secular point of view.

sense of humor

Dr Wright has a dry sense of humor which comes across in the lectures making them compelling viewing.

Wright´s good sense of humor brings new light to Buddhism.

Great underplayed sense of humor in the service of a synthesis of topics I'm very interested in.

I also enjoyed Mr Wright's sense of humor and his anecdotes about the dogs - Milo and Frazier.

Prof Wright is a great teacher, and I love his elegant, understated sense of humor.

Dr Wright is a pleasure to listen to; he is enthusiastic about the topic and has a fantastic sense of humor.

The teaching is very good with good pacing and clear presentation of the material (I also liked Prof. Wright's somewhat dry sense of humor, personally). The load is a bit demanding for a working person if you insist on doing all the extra reading and viewing the extra material (which I did anyway, because it was interesting and I am stubborn :) ) but it's only 6 weeks so you can pull through it, or just stay with the core.I got out of this course with many interesting ideas to think about, and with 2 books I from which I read some chapters that I would very much like to go on and read completely.

I learned a lot and loved the dogggies and the professor's sense of humor!

why buddhism is true

I was inspired to take Robert Wright's course Buddhism and Modern Psychology after reading the book he researched and wrote while teaching this course, with the provocative title Why Buddhism is True.

The course was mentioned in Dr. Wright's book, “Why Buddhism is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment”, and am glad I signed up for it.

This is one of the rare courses that is fundementally academic & philisophical et touches the soul I wanted to work through this course for interest as I have been following Buddhist philosophy for approx 10 years during which I attended the local Buddhist Centre for lessons given by a Tibetan monk, Rinpoche Tupten, for three years (3 times a week).I also had purchased and read "Why Buddhism is True" written by Robert Wright.

The course is developed by Robert Wright who published the book "Why Buddhism is True."

Would do again :) In this excellent course Robert Wright shares his research that went into his latest book "Why Buddhism is True."

look at

I strongly suggest people to have a look at the course content.

I will not give any spoilers but this is a course with a twist and it will change the way you look at the world forever.

Very interesting course, really made me look at "things" differently.

I look at the Buddha more as a scientist than a philosopher and hence it is very interesting for me to know similarities between Buddhist thought and psychology.

It gives me a interesting way to look at life.

Exceptionally well-done course Although I do not have time to finish my assignments, I'd like to say: Your series of lectures have changed the way I look at life.

His personality is fun, thoughtful, open, and kind (... and he's not bad to look at either), and his knowledge regarding Buddhism and Psychology is great.

Dr. Wright is an insightful lecturer and provides a look at both Buddhism and modern psychology in a straight forward way clearing both subjects of unnecessary cultural clutter and jargon.

Truly a delightful, thought-provoking look at the human mind.

It will change you how you look at yourself and the world.

insight into

An excellent insight into evolutionary psychology and how modern science seems to lend credit to Buddhist theory of the min and meditation practice Very practical ways to understand the wisdom of Buddha.

It's very thought-provoking and provides insight into meditation--a subject that eludes many people.

I am loving this course and it is giving me tons of new insight into life and the world!

I got deeper insight into Buddhism and learned a lot about myself, too.

Dr Wright combines expertise in evolutionary psychology with passion for philosophy and meditation to provide keen insight into theory and practice of "Western Buddhism."

It was exactly what I was looking for: a concise, enjoyable and informative insight into the psychological aspects of Buddhism.

This course provides insight into the workings of the mind.

This course has provided me with a very valuable insight into my own mind, as well as basics of Buddhism, and its cross with modern science.
