En este curso introductorio a la psicología de la sensación y la percepción podrás encontrar respuestas a estas y otras preguntas. La capacidad para recolectar y dar sentido a la información que nos llega del entorno es un aspecto clave para entender nuestra vida mental y nuestro comportamiento. Por eso, se encuentra entre los temas más importantes y más antiguos de la psicología. Este curso te permitirá explorar videos, lecturas y actividades para que puedas ir apropiándote de conceptos básicos de este campo a partir de ejemplos concretos, interrogantes clásicos y avances neurocientíficos recientes.

A su vez, se persiguen los siguientes objetivos generales:

• Diferenciar los conceptos de sensación y percepción e identificar las principales tareas o técnicas que se usan para estudiar estos fenómenos.

¿Una “ventana” a la realidad?
En esta semana empezarás diferenciando los conceptos de sensación y percepción. Luego, explorarás los elementos principales del proceso perceptivo, desde su inicio hasta su resultado, y las tareas más frecuentes para investigar dicho proceso. Al hacerlo, revisarás algunas nociones neurocientíficas y psicológicas básicas. Finalmente, analizarás la pregunta de hasta qué punto lo que percibimos es un reflejo fiel de lo que nos rodea. ¿Percibimos el ambiente “tal como es”? El caso de la percepción visual
En esta semana explorarás la visión para recorrer, paso a paso, el proceso perceptivo presentado en el módulo 1. Empezarás conociendo características básicas del estímulo (la luz) y de la anatomía y función del sistema visual, desde el ojo hasta el cerebro. Luego, conocerás algunas claves y principios que la percepción utiliza para lograr ver la forma, profundidad y tamaño de los objetos a partir de los puntos de luz que llegan al ojo. También examinarás el fenómeno del color, partiendo del supuesto de que, aunque no lo parezca, los colores no están en las cosas, sino en quien percibe. Finalmente, verás ejemplos sobre cómo la modalidad visual influye y se ve influida por otras modalidades sensoriales, como la audición y el tacto.
Percepción y cognición
La percepción no se agota en procesar los datos que llegan del ambiente. Para dar sentido a esos datos, la percepción se vale del contexto y genera expectativas. En esta semana, verás investigaciones psicológicas que buscan poner a prueba esa afirmación. Empezarás revisando la influencia de los conocimientos previos sobre lo que percibimos, partiendo de estudios con adultos y con niños pequeños. Luego, explorarás el importante papel de la atención en la percepción. ¿Se puede percibir un estímulo al que no le estás prestando atención? ¿Existe la percepción por fuera de la atención y la experiencia consciente? Después, examinarás la influencia de los estados motivacionales sobre la percepción. ¿Vemos la pendiente de una colina más empinada cuando llevamos una pesada mochila que cuando no lo hacemos? ¿Vemos el arco de fútbol más grande si vamos ganando? En la lección 3 de este módulo te encontrarás con estudios que sugieren que, a veces, la percepción se alinea con nuestros intereses y necesidades. . Finalizaremos el curso presentando, en la lección 4, algunos ejemplos sobre cómo transferir los temas vistos a campos aplicados, como el tratamiento de personas con daño cerebral y el diseño de publicidades.
