In the first half of this course (Structure of the US Healthcare Industry), we answer the following questions:

  1. What are the differences between curative medicine and preventive care?
  2. Who are the key players in the US healthcare industry?
  3. How does the typical patient/customer in the American healthcare system think of their hospital care needs?

In the second half of this lecture (Structure of the US Healthcare Industry), we answer the following questions:

  4. What other care givers are in the healthcare industry?
  5. How do Hospitals and Medical Centers fit into all of these?
  6. How is this multi-billion dollar industry paid for?

To better understand where you are going as a healthcare administrator, you have to know where the industry is coming from. This lecture on the History of Healthcare in America is a deep dive into how medicine, insurance and healthcare administration became what it is today. We answer the following questions:

  1. What happened in the first 30 years of this century and how does it relate to healthcare today? 1900-1930
  2. What effect did the great depression have and how did the social security act come about? 1930-1940
  3. What was the fair deal, how did health insurance by employers become a thing and how did politics play a part in shaping healthcare in this decade? 1940-1950
  4. What lead to experience rating and how did the Kerr-Mills Act, Bettercare and the Ways and Means Committee's suggestions become Medicare & Medicaid? What was the biggest mistake in fiscal intermediaries? 1950-1965

A deeper dive into the History of Healthcare in America starts us off in the mid 20th century with the advent of Medicare. In this half we answer the following questions:

  1. What was the AMA's stand on Medicare and how did pricing and cost become an issue in this time? 1965-1979
  2. What was the talk of the day in hospital management and how did government decide to pay for services provided by hospitals? 1980-1990
  3. How did Clinton's Health Security Act evolve and how much was healthcare costing America at this point? 1990-2000
  4. How did cost containment yield to lean6sigma's, resource management, downsizing and consulting in healthcare in these years? What was the politics of the day? 2000-2008
  5. How did the newly elected president change everything in healthcare? How did Clinton's plan help and what was the eventual law passed as Universal healthcare was developed? What is the future of healthcare in America? 2008-Date.

Describe the role of the healthcare administrator as well as the educational requirements to becoming one
