Mentoring, at its core, is a developmental relationship in which a more experienced or knowledgeable person (the mentor) guides a less experienced or less knowledgeable person (the mentee). This guidance often encompasses career advice, skill development, and psychosocial support. Unlike teaching, which primarily focuses on imparting specific knowledge or skills, or counseling, which often addresses personal problems or emotional distress, mentoring takes a more holistic approach to the mentee's growth, often with a long-term perspective. It also differs from coaching, which is typically performance-driven and focused on specific, measurable, short-term goals. The essence of mentoring lies in the transfer of wisdom, the fostering of potential, and the building of a supportive connection that empowers the mentee to navigate their professional and sometimes personal journey.
